Starting out, we had plenty of space in the core box of Smash Up for a couple of expansions. But after the Obligatory Cthulhu Set, the reality of the box came into focus. We filled up the core box and no longer can fit future expansions. Does this mean Alderac Entertainment Group will no longer make expansions? Are we on our own to find new housing for our Zombie and Bear Cavalry decks? Who would win in a fight: Dracula or Frankenstein? (We can find out in the next expansion for Smash Up, Monster Smash. You see what I did there? That was called a plug.) AEG has our back. They have these questions answered. I present to you: The Big Geeky Box.
You’re Gonna Need a Bigger Box.
How big is the The Big Geeky Box? Here’s the spec list: 14 inches long, 9 inches wide and 4.5 inches deep. To put that in perspective here is the core Smash Up box: 9.25 inches long, 9.25 inches wide and 2.75 inches deep. Now that we know it’s Big, let’s get Geeky with it. We have gone from 235 cubic inches to a whopping 567 cubic inches. 141% MORE space…whoa, that’s a big box.
Ok, a big box is just a big box. You could have gotten that on your own, right? Yeah, there’s more to this big box. This box is strong, really strong. The outside walls of both the box and lid are extra thick cardboard and then wrapped in a durable linen coating. Inside the box there are thick dividers that are securely attached during the construction. The three divided sections are layered with a smooth sheet, allowing you to slide cards with ease as you remove for game play.
Big, strong, but how many expansions does it hold? A lot. I could give you a card count estimate but honestly, words do not even begin to describe the space you get in The Big Geeky Box. Here, let me show you.
What’s Under the Hood?
AEG is not done, no way. Inside of the box, to help you keep your cards from sliding all over, are some nicely snug foam blocks. You can divide the box up however you wish with these. I prefer to just have mine all in a single alphabetical row. In addition to the foam blocks are some very slick deck divider cards for each deck. Hard plastic, brilliant print quality and polished smooth finish, AEG has really set the bar when it comes to card dividers. I was really impressed with the quality of these dividers. Also included, you get the dividers for the next expansion, Monster Smash. (Ha, did it again!)
To finish it off, AEG has included a new deck, Geeks. The deck’s theme is based on the YouTube channel Geek & Sundry, popular for their TableTop show and orchestrating the very successful International TableTop Day. Smash Up was even featured during the first season of TableTop and was a hugely popular episode. Featuring Wil Wheaton, Felicia Day and various “geek” characters and abilities, the deck focuses on manipulating Actions and Minions that are played. Combine it with the Wizards deck and you could draw and play quite a few cards in a single turn.
Final Thoughts on The Big Geeky Box.
What’s my opinion of The Big Geeky Box? Well, if you can’t tell from above, I’m really happy with it. It’s honestly a no-brainer for anyone playing Smash Up. I found a home for it on my board game shelf and so will everyone else.
Releasing September 4th, order today. Also, be sure to pre-order the upcoming Monster Smash, themed perfectly to release in time for Halloween. (Three times, ha!)
