DAY 0 – Trade Day
Wow what a first couple of days at GenCon we’ve had. The PHD team arrived late Tuesday ready for an early start on Wednesday, Trade Day. This first day, which I’ll refer to as Day 0 since it was only open to manufacturers, distributors, retailers and educators, was dominated by catching up with some awesome retailers and attending Wizards of the Coast seminars. Let me rewind just a little. GenCon had arranged an awesome track to bring in Educators (teachers and librarians) to attend various seminars outlining different aspects of games and gaming. The benefits to child development, which we all know are huge, and how it can be used in the school curriculum. Kudos to GenCon for bringing this in since the attendance was standing room only in some seminars.
So what gems of information did Wizards have to say? They covered plans for Kaijudo which includes a robust Organized Play plan for 2014. They’ll be increasing the number of championship qualifier locations from 24 to 30. These will be all hand picked by Wizards and from the list they just published, they are all new locations meaning none that ran a qualifier in the first round of his program are included in the second. An understandable move to spread the benefits beyond the same stores each time.
Greg Leeds, CEO of Wizards also held an open Q&A discussion with retailers addressing concerns and feedback. A great move from Wizards as this certainly proved they cared about getting feedback directly from the front lines and will look at what they can adopt going forward. Obviously most of the questions were about supply quantities and getting access to more with cited examples.
