Magic 2014 – Duels of the Planeswalkers expands the very successful line of digital Magic offerings that have introduced the game to new players all over the world. This summer Wizards of the Coast are happy to provide this exciting avenue into face-to-face Magic play. As always, retailers will play a key role in helping new players discover the full array of possibilities with the Magic experience. Magic 2014 players will receive in-game messages directing them to use the Wizards Store and Event Locator to find their local Wizards Play Network locations to pick up their promotional booster pack (while supplies last). And that’s where stores come in…
The Promo Booster Pack Program
If you took advantage of the signup window, which closed May 7th, the Magic 2014 promo booster pack program is your opportunity to welcome Magic 2014 – Duels of the Planeswalkersplayers into your store. It provides you the opportunity to receive players in your store and, while they’re there, introduce them to your Magic community, show them the products you offer and encourage them to attend upcoming events in order to help them take their enjoyment of the game to the next level.
This year’s promo booster pack program reaches players on Android tablet, iPad, Steam, Xbox Live Arcade, and the Playstation Network. Each pack contains an alternate-art foil rare card from the Magic 2014 – Core Set. The pack contains six total playable cards (the foil rare and five common or uncommon cards from Magic 2014 – Core Set) as well as an ad card promoting Friday Night Magic and Magic Celebration.
What You Should Do
Help Magic 2014 Players Redeem Their Vouchers
Players who play Magic 2014 – Duels of the Planeswalkers will be directed to a URL with a code they enter to print a voucher. They’ll bring the voucher to you to redeem for the promo booster pack. You’ll verify the platform the player used to obtain the voucher (Xbox, for example) and give them a promo booster for that platform (each promo booster clearly identifies the platform it is for). And you can do even more!
Introduce New Players to Face-to-face Magic & Events
Having a new player in your store that may be unfamiliar with face-to-face Magic is the perfect opportunity to make a good impression and help make them feel comfortable with the world your store has to offer. You’re encouraged to teach new players how to play face-to-face Magic and invite them to participate in your organized play events, particularly casual, open play style events. The Magic 2014 – Core Set Prerelease is the perfect opportunity for those players to get their feet wet with organized play. Printing a number of flyers advertising your Prerelease event and then handing them to players who enter your store to pick up their promo booster pack is a great way to get them to return. Or, publicize Friday Night Magic as a repeatable in-store experience that allows Magic2014 players to meet new players. And Celebration is a fun, free event for all Magic players!
Build Lasting Relationships
At the end of the day, the promo booster pack program is a great opportunity for new players to find your store and begin the process of learning about organized play and face-to-face Magic play. Don’t waste the opportunity! Make sure to invite these players to return. Strike up a conversation, invite them to play a game, or provide them with printed materials to refer to upcoming events once they leave your store. You can even offer to play a game with them! Included in your Magic 2014 – Duels of the Planeswalkers promo booster pack program kit materials will be items you can use to teach the game. Hand out a few sample decks provided in your kit so they have something to play with at home and to return to play with at your store. Do everything you can to take advantage of this unique marketing opportunity!
