Lotus seemingly came out of nowhere at Gen Con and hit the BoardGameGeek Hotness list in no small part due to the game’s gorgeous artwork and particular strain of unique theme.
Renegade Games is running an early-release program to help you get a free demo copy of the game and a one-week-early release date. Here are the details:
In Lotus, players will have hands of cards depicting petals of various gorgeous flowers. Players will be playing these petal cards to create and complete flowers. The player who has majority on a completed flower will claim it as points. Players have personal decks, and their cards feature guardian symbols, which are used to track the player with majority.
On your turn, you’ll be taking two actions, including playing petals to flowers (including starting a new flower), drawing more cards, and moving one of your guardians. Each player will have a different species of guardian, such as a dragonfly or caterpillar, and when a flower is completed, these wooden guardian pieces will be added to players’ guardian symbols on petal cards.
In addition, each player will begin the game with three power tiles, and when a player would score a flower, that player may instead flip one of these tiles, activating its ability for the rest of the game. The abilities include having an increased hand size and unlocking a more powerful guardian token.
The game continues until one player’s deck has been exhausted, and the player with the most points wins!
