To support the release of their latest games, First Martians, Portal Games created a launch event to get players engaged and encourage early purchases of the game. It is tremendously helpful for retailers when a publisher provides this level of support for a game. Portal Games is known for providing great support for their flagship games, which gives retailers the confidence to stock their products.
This has been the case with Imperial Settlers (PLG0565), Neuroshima Hex (PLG0671), and more, but with First Martians and its companion app, there is the potential to do much more. Take a look at the things Portal Games has done so far, and then keep a look out for more Portal promotions for its upcoming games and Event Kits in the future!
The first way they’re making use of the app is by providing a special mission, titled “Removal,” that is only available for the two-week, early-launch window. Your first Martians will be tasked with building their permanent quarters. In addition, Portal Games has prepared a special in-app tutorial variant for the “Removal” mission, with preconstructed events, that will help you learn the rules of the game. To make it even easier to get into this special mission, Portal Games has created a series of videos.
Theme and Rules Presentation:
For most board games, it takes months for new expansion or promo content to become available. With First Martians and its app, however, Portal Games can create new content and deploy it, for free, quickly, adding more value to the initial player purchase. This is one of the way Portal Games seeks to make First Martians into a title that will always be in demand and will be a mainstay on store shelves.
Already, they’ve made a few updates. First came twenty-five brand new event cards, and they are going to add more events in the future, to further increase game replayability and unpredictability. In addition, they have added a new social-media sharing feature! From the app, players can share with their friends on Twitter how they’ve failed…and convince them to help out next time!
Based on early feedback about First Martians, Portal Games has already compiled their Rules Almanac for the game. This PDF document provides support for anyone who has a tough time finding the right ruling in the rule book or companion app. With an extended index and hyperlinked navigation, it is a great tool for players.

- Exception section, to help with all those intricate scenario rules
This is an additional document, so players do not have to read it to enjoy a full First Martians experience. However, this is a valuable resource that exemplifies the amount of support Portal Games provides for their releases.
Ignacy Trzewiczek, author and lead designer of First Martians logged on to a live stream through YouTube last week to share some insights about the game’s development, its overall reception, and its future! Viewers were able to tune in and ask questions related to First Martians and its Early Launch program. You can check out the recording below.
In addition, Portal Games provided players with a unique opportunity to win customized player boards, with their photo and name printed on a high-quality, hard cardboard. Starting September 21 and every day for five days, entrants could post to the Portal Twitter or Facebook a photo or video of them playing First Martians. Every day had one winner who would receive this unique player board.
With all Portal Games has already done, and with the ability to push updates, including new missions, event cards, and features, to the app at any time, you can be sure First Martians is a game that will be providing value to players for years to come. This kind of publisher support is what it takes for a game to stand out among the myriad of titles releasing each week in the world of board games.
Make sure you don’t miss out on future products from Portal Games, including more Early Launch Kits and Event Kits for Alien Artifacts (PLG0552, with a PHD article coming later this week!), Imperial Settlers (PLG0565), Cry Havoc (PLG071), and the Cry Havoc: Aftermath (PLG0842) expansion!
