How Does One “Tie-in”?
The release of the movie Yu-Gi-Oh! The Dark Side of Dimensions in theaters January 27, 2016 opens up a host of opportunities to create exciting promotions in your community. First, I suggest reaching out to the manager of the local movie theater and asking if there is a way to cross-promote your products. They may have an additional movie poster or standee that you could put up in your store directing folks to pre-order their movie tickets. This creates general excitement for both releases. Also, the theater manager might be willing to exchange movie tickets for packs of cards that you would both give away via a raffle or similar promotion. Make sure the winners are handed their free tickets during your store’s Yu-Gi-Oh! tournament or release party so they can see your customers having fun.

With Disney continually renewing interest in the Star Wars Universe via major movie releases like Rogue One, and the Rebels television show, there’s always room for promoting adventure games from a galaxy far, far away. Again, movie tickets in exchange for cards or booster minis can be a good exchange. Another option would be to reach out to local libraries or schools with after-school activities. Offer to run games for free, and afterwards, hand out invitations to your weekly Star Wars X-Wing Dogfight events along with coupons for 15% off their first purchase.

With the next book in the Song of Ice and Fire series scheduled for release in March of this year and season 7 of Game of Thrones television show premiering this summer, now is the time to start building up interest in games and accessories related to the world created by George R. R. Martin, and adding a Living Card Game (or LCG) tournament to your organized play line-up should spark some interest. And again, libraries are perfect venues to promote the excitement surrounding a book or book-based show like Game of Thrones.

One closing thought. It probably goes without saying that whatever in-store media tie-ins that you orchestrate, make sure that you devote prime real estate to your display. Your front windows and racks are almost always the most impactful, though you know your store better than anyone. Be sure and fill any empty spaces with posters and related material so that your display will be eye-catching and theme focused.
