When you were deciding what the initial layout of your store was going to look like, you probably took a lot of time and effort to envision where everything would go and the type of presentation your storefront would make. You knew where every shelf, every rack and every register would call it’s home.
Now, you may be discovering that you need a little more room. Product focus has changed and new types of merchandise demand a different type of presentation. Depending on the types of events that you have scheduled in your store, it can get crowded quickly. Whether it’s a book signing, board game night, or a big TCG pre-release event, we often find ourselves wishing that we had more room. That’s why making your storefront flexible is a smart move. Never underestimate the importance of your ability to quickly create the space that you need.
Creating Flexible Selling and Gaming Space
Now, if you are just getting started in the hobby and game industry, then choosing fixtures that are mobile is definitely the way to go. They will be a little more expensive, but as a retailer your merchandising and event options will increase dramatically and that is truly invaluable. Also, keep in mind that racks that can roll off of your sales floor and into your backroom can potentially double the available space for your events.
If you have an existing store with wheel-less gondolas (4-ways), apparel racks, and shelf units, there are a couple of simple solutions. Most manufacturers will offer clip-on or snap in wheels for your current fixtures. However, it may be difficult to find out who the manufacturer is. Also, there is the possibility that they may not even be in business any longer. If that is the case, then you may have to take matters into your own hands. Chances are that your local hardware store will carry casters that you can attach with a drill and some heavy-duty screws. Just make sure that they will support the full weight of the rack including merchandise.
The Benefits of a Flexible Storefront
With a flexible storefront, your ability to craft dynamic presentation space is greatly expanded. For instance, if you need to display multiple copies of a large game, you can spin your gondolas lengthwise and properly merchandise them with the appropriate signage. And, if you are having a book signing or a sale where crowd control is mandatory, you can arrange your fully-stocked gondolas end-to-end to form a row (or funnel) that ends at the cashwrap. That way, your customers will be shopping while they wait in line. This will reduce the perceived wait time and more than likely increase average transaction amounts. Finally, as you continue to expand your organized play community, your ability to accommodate your store’s growth will be extraordinary.
