You’ll start out a game of Quest by choosing one of the game’s four characters: the sorcerous Zebra Amelior, the dino-shifting Kralls, the shadowy warrior Thevys, or the glowing sisters Nina & Mona. Shuffle your character’s five special event cards into the event deck, and shuffle the encounter cards to form the encounter deck. Prepare the first stage by dealing out a pyramid of encounter cards.
Each turn, you’ll draw an event card, which will affect the next encounter or the rest of the game in some way. Some are Boons, which power up your character, and some are Quests, which offer you methods of winning the game. Many events, however, are negative and will hinder your character in the upcoming encounter.
Next, you’ll reveal the top card of the pyramid and roll the five black six-sided dice. These dice will lock into matching dice symbols on the enemy encounter card, and you can lock in matching dice to your own character’s symbols as well. When all of the symbols of a combo have dice locked into them, its effect will apply, usually increasing the Combat, Survival, or Intellect of the card. You can reroll unlocked dice as many times as you want to try to complete your combos, but you’ll be risking completing the combo of the enemy!
Once you decided to stop rerolling, check whether any of your character’s stats is higher than the encounter’s—if so, you can defeat the encounter and claim it as XP. If not, the encounter deals you damage and is discarded.
The encounter pyramid shrinks each time you face a new one, and after four encounters, the stage is completed. When you deal a new stage, the stage level increases, adding 1 to all encounters’ stats and making them more challenging. But when you’ve gained 3 XP, you can spend them to level up, increasing your stats as well. You’ll also be able to spend the inspiration icons of your XP to gain inspiration abilities from the event discard pile. Activate these inspirations for more power ups as you play.
When your 6 hit points are lost, you lose the game. But if you find a Quest and complete it, you win!
Quest: Awakening of Melior is an easy-to-set-up, easy-to-play solitaire adventure that offers plenty of replay value with its four distinct characters, myriad of event cards, and variety of encounters. Reroll choices and inspirations offer interesting decisions, while the dice and event cards keep you on your toes!
