Dinosaurs firing lasers and Bionic Gorillas, you would think Smash Up already has it all. You my friend, are beautifully wrong. Alderac Entertainment Group has released it’s newest expansion: Pretty Pretty Smash Up.
Too Cute To Handle
Like previous expansions, Pretty Pretty adds 4 new factions to your Smash Up game. Mystic Horses, Fairies, Princeses and Kitty Cats will be joining the rest of your misfit pop-culture factions to fill up your Big Geeky Box. Unlike previous expansions, Pretty Pretty does in fact come with 4 high quality plastic dividers. These are for your new factions to organize in your Big Geeky Box and are the same quality of the dividers that came with it.
Every faction added to Smash Up has a unique way they play and have built in strategies. I have “acquired” a copy, shh, don’t tell anyone, and I want to tell you about these hurl-worthy cuties.
Friendliness is Mystical
Minions, minions, minions and OMG why are there so many horses?! Mystic Horses are all about bringing your minions together. There are a lot of banding powers that work off of other minions you have in play. Minions with Talents that allow you to draw when you play a minion. Minions that allow you to play a minion every time you play a minion. Abilities that move your minions to a base with another minion. But the big bomb in the deck is: Super Future Space Armor Power. No, that is not the name of the new TV anime based on Smash Up. It is an Action card, that when played, gives all minions on a base with another minion, +2 power. Think about that. With all the minion gain this deck brings, that can be multiple broken bases at a single time. Now mix this deck with Robots…yeah, big-bada-boom.
This or That or Those or These
One of the most crucial ability in any deck based game is having the right option at the right time. Fairies bring this solution to Smash Up with their magic power theme. Most of the cards are not incredibly powerful but what they bring are options in almost every card. Fairies give you 2 options to choose from on most cards, “This or That”. You will have so many options at your disposal each draw, you will be able to carry out any crazy combination. Fairies have another strong theme to deflect attacks against your minions on to other targets or on to themselves, saving your more valuable minions. Fairies might be the most diverse deck in any Smash Up deck, having something to help every deck type. They may be small but they bring some big game to yours.
I Think That Would Look Better Over There
I think most guys have been there. Pretty girl comes along and needs a hand with something. Bat their eyes and before you know it, the back of your truck has a futon, cat tower and you’re 100 miles past the state line. Princesses are no stranger to these ways. This deck comes with very few minions, though all are power 5 and have some serious minion and player manipulation powers. Eliza for example, no relation to the Frozen princess of course, has an Ongoing ability that prevents other players from playing more then one extra card per turn. Cause ya know, your too busy moving her stuff to the fourth floor, with no elevator. Speaking of moving, like the Pirate deck, there are a lot of options for moving your minions around. Just like that solid wood futon.
Dogs > Cats
I’m just saying AEG, think of the destruction you could create with a puppy expansion? Sure kittens are cute, cuddly and have unholy razor claws…nah, you’re right. Kittens are super destructive and manipulative. This Kitty Cats deck is pretty spot on; Controlling minions and their own fate, avoiding being destroyed. Turning on the cuteness, these cats bring down your opponents minions strength, take control of their minions or destroy them in place of their own demise. They will also use each other for their own gain, like in Cat Fight. An Action card, allows you to draw as many cards as a target minion’s power, then destroy that minion. This is good for bases that are lost to you but you have a big minion stuck there. I already give in to my cats too much as it is. Now I have to when I play Smash Up.
Is This Expansion Just Cute?
While, some of the cards in Pretty Pretty are just the most “dorbz evah”, there are some solid additions to the game. I really see myself wanting the Fairie deck in EVERY game. Such versatility, being able to always provide you with an answer or a deflection when needed. The Princesses are an interesting lot, having so few minions in the deck but when they come out they will reign control over everything before them. Combine them with Plants or Tricksters and no one will be able to get anything done. Kitty Cats are pretty mean and would fit right in with some of our Arkham friends from Obligatory Cthulhu. Lastly, those Mystic Horses are going to be the deck to beat though. So much base dominance and can work well with really any faction, especially Robots or Pirates. Despite this dainty cover, I think we have another Awesome 9000 on our hands with a very strong expansion.
Dividers Are a Geeks Best Friend
The Big Geeky Box introduced proper storage for us long time Smash Up collectors. With it, we also got some pretty pretty sweet dividers. I have been wondering if future expansions for Smash Up would include the same quality dividers. Yes, yes they do. Honestly, this may sound really sad but these may be more exciting to me than more cards for Smash Up. I don’t think it’s a secret I have a bit of an obsession when it comes to organizing. In all seriousness, this is a great move on AEG’s part. They easily could have just sold them separately each few expansions, but no, they made the effort to include them and not raise the price of the expansions. Bravo AEG, bravo.
