Every Thursday on Geek & Sundry’s YouTube channel, Will Wheaton gets fellow notable geeks together to compete in their favorite board games such as Qwirkle, Tsuro of the Seas, Lords of Waterdeep or Elder Sign. For the author and former Star Trek: The Next Generation star, playing games around a table with family and friends has always been a great bonding experience.
Nobody can deny the power of this webisode. To quote Scott Thorne on ICv2 “I am a big fan of TableTop. I think it is the best thing to hit the gaming industry in the past five years and probably the most positive influence upon it since the release of Dungeons & Dragons 3.0. The publishers of both Tsuro and Ticket to Ride point to TableTop as directly responsible for significant jumps in sales of those titles.” and Scott goes on “We have found that the “Wheaton Effect” does bump sales. We saw a marked increase in sales of Ticket to Ride after its appearance on TableTop but not on its sister titles. Then the Ticket to Ride Europe ran a few weeks ago and sales quadrupled on that title”. Scott is an actual store owner and the above illustrates the impact of each individual episode on his business.
Therefore it just makes sense for a your business to track what’s on each edition and ensure they have enough of those games in stock. Not so easy since they don’t announce ahead what they’ll be covering but we can get you products quickly once it is known.
Last year Will and Felicia Day (co-presenter and producer of TableTop) started TableTop Game Day. Basically, it was a huge success with the inaugural TableTop Day last March featured more than 3,100 organized events in 64 countries, and Felicia Day was “bowled over” by the response to the event, “And we hope to at least double that this year.”
No small goal but in 2014 the Geek & Sundry folks estimate 6,000 local meet-ups and 11 million participants for this year’s event and gamers will be directed by TableTop to locations found on their website at TableTopDay.com.
“I think it’s amazing that the Internet can facilitate people to come together in person and celebrate something they love,” says Felicia Day, who will be hosting a TableTop Day tentpole event in Los Angeles with Wheaton. “It’s almost the natural evolution of social media: taking connections you make online, offline.”
“Board games are a perfect vehicle for strangers to meet over, or friends to rekindle relationships, and that’s why I think they’re experiencing a surge in popularity now. We’re so happy to help encourage that phenomenon.”
How do I get involved?
We can’t recommend enough that all stores take part in this event. Scheduled for April 5th, 2014, you should apply over at their website.
What do I run?
You can run pretty much anything. It’s about celebrating the hobby and having a fun experience that has the natural effect of doing two things. Driving sales of those games on that day and highlighting your store as THE place to buy and play games. Remember TableTop will advertise your store as part of the event, directing local players to your store on April 5th. That’s free advertising right there!
Anyway enough from me. Let me allow Will and Felicia to tell you more…
