Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shadows of the Past is a scenario-driven campaign game that features story content from the IDW TMNT comic. Taking the role of their favorite Turtle or the ultimate villain Shredder, players battle their way through a series of 60- to 90-minute missions in which they develop their characters’ strengths, fighting styles, and equipment along the way to create a lasting story arc. Fan-favorite characters like Casey Jones and Alopex appear throughout the missions as the Turtles call on their closest allies for help in battling their deadliest foes.
The game uses a dice-driven system to determine both actions and the strength of those action. For example, a character may use a die that rolled an attack face in order to perform an attack action and then refer to the character’s attack skill to find the number of battle dice to roll to determine a number of hits. In addition, the game uses a cooperative system of dice placement in which players place their action dice to their left, right, and center at the beginning of each round. A die placed on the left will show an icon that can benefit the player on the left, while a die placed on a player’s right will show an icon to benefit the player on the right. Raphael is the exception—as the loner, he can’t benefit from other Turtles’ dice, though he does have six dice instead of three to choose from.
The game includes multiple scenarios for the Turtles to adventure through as well as plenty of special move cards for customizing the characters along the way. Villain ability cards allow the Shredder player to customize as well. There are sixteen scenarios, forming four “comics,” which are strings of scenarios that tell individual stories. Thus, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shadows of the Past will provide months of content when played once a week. Replay scenarios to try different special-move-card combinations, and home-brew scenarios for even more replayability!
