The folks at Konami recently announced that beginning with the release of the Eternity Code (KON84826) booster display in May 2020, they will no longer be offering Special Edition versions of their booster product. They will also be increasing the set foil count, and flattening the rarity within each category for all of their core (100-card) boosters.
This change means that collectors and players alike will need to purchase their cards from the newest booster set to complete their collections and build their decks, with no expectation of a follow-up release. This should help drive a more dynamic organized-play program for brick-and-mortar stores as well as stronger secondary-market sales overall.
Also, retailers should take into account that they may need to adjust their pre-orders to match Konami’s new business model. With no follow-up Special Edition release, stores should consider increasing their purchases to support the stronger up-front release interest—and sustain them until the next booster set.
